Puzzle #98 - Surplus Sudoku

It’s been a very long time since I posted any puzzles on here! I’ve still been constructing puzzles, I just never got round to writing any posts, and as the backlog of puzzles grew, so did the inertia preventing me from uploading any to the blog. This Surplus Sudoku marks the start of a process of combing the backlog, sorting out the puzzles which are half-decent, and collecting them all here in one place.

This puzzle uses an uncommon trick to get started, but once you find what you’re looking for, the path to the end will open up.

Rules

Place a number from 1 to 7 into each empty cell so that every row and column contains each number exactly once, and so that every outlined 8-cell region contains each number at least once.

Difficulty: 5/10
